Wanna Hurts Donut?

Hurts_donut_case

The latest in the ongoing expansion of Hurts Donuts, on East Republic Rd in Springfield’s south side.

The current downtown Springfield location, as well as it’s original downtown location, are both historic buildings with exposed brick finishes.  For this location in a modern retail center, we brought some of that with us for an industrial-modern style using thin brick, reclaimed pallet wood, steel tread plate, and their bright signature colors.  Large mixing whisks were fashioned into custom light fixtures.  The company’s iconic black and white photographs, and three dimensional sign were all continued.Hurts_donut_wood_wall

Assisted Living Projects in design phase

2014-12-30_111756We are currently in design development phase for two assisted living facilities in the Southwest US.  Current plans are for buildings of approximately 175,000 sq.ft. containing 120+ one and two bedroom units serving a combination of independent living and assisted living residents.

The buildings will be designed to blend with the dominant southwest architectural styles of the area and will include a large interior courtyard and country-club style common area.  Amenities will include library, beauty shop, theater, exercise areas, lounges, and public home-style kitchens with private dining areas.

Prime locations put the projects within short distances of shopping districts and golf courses.

More information as it becomes publicly releasable.

IKEA Geothermal: There is no spoon

there_is_no_spoonIKEA is well on their way to a fall opening this year of a new location serving the Kansas City area.  That’s news in and of itself, but what makes it news-worthy in an architectural and engineering context is that it will have the largest rooftop solar panel array of any building in Kansas, and the biggest geothermal heating and cooling system of any building in both Kansas and Missouri.  Which brings to mind the kid in The Matrix who says “there is no spoon.”  More on that.

Now offering Engineering Reviews of Home Inspection Reports

After seeing the errors that a couple of presumably typical home inspection report contained, and learning that home inspector’s don’t require any kind of license or certification, we are now offering reviews of those reports for accuracy, by a state licensed professional engineer.

We’ve seen reports with egregious errors in understanding the building codes, incorrect interpretation of foundation cracks, and simply unnecessary alterations being suggested.  If not caught these problems could have cost the home sellers tens of  thousand of dollars to repair or resulted in a lost sale.  A review by an engineer can identify those errors and evaluate if the report’s recommendations have any true engineering merit.

If you’re an agent or home seller and have a home inspection report that i...

WiFi Lighting

I like this concept, but don’t think it will gain acceptance until wireless wall switches come along for it. That would mean we could place light fixtures wherever we want, and switches wherever we want, and let the owner determine which switch controls which light or grouping of lights. Subsequent changes to that plan would be done from an app instead of requiring an electrician to rewire. Needs to be standardized for interoperability also.
